Wilhelm Griesinger, a German physician and psychiatrist, significantly contributed to the fields of psychiatry, neurology, and medical education. He is often recognized as one of the founders of modern psychiatry.

Griesinger emphasized studying the biological underpinnings of mental illness, advocating for a scientific approach to understand psychiatric disorders. He believed that mental illnesses, akin to physical illnesses, had physiological causes and could be studied and treated using empirical methods.

One of Griesinger’s most influential works is his textbook “Die Pathologie und Therapie der psychischen Krankheiten” (“The Pathology and Therapy of Mental Disorders”), which he published in 1845. In this book, he presented a systematic approach to psychiatric diagnosis and treatment based on clinical observation and pathological research. He argues that mental disorders should be understood within the context of brain pathology and advocated for integrating psychiatry with the broader field of medicine.

Griesinger also played a key role in developing psychiatric hospitals and training psychiatric professionals. He stressed the importance of humane treatment for psychiatric patients and advocated for establishing specialized institutions providing comprehensive care.

Despite encountering controversy, Griesinger’s ideas laid the groundwork for biological psychiatry’s emergence and integrating medical and psychological perspectives in understanding mental disorders.
