Berthold Stokvis (1839–1902) was a Dutch physician and pioneering researcher in the field of hematology. Born on April 17, 1839, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, he pursued his medical studies at the University of Amsterdam, where he earned his doctorate in medicine in 1862.

Stokvis became known for his extensive research on blood coagulation and the physiology of blood cells. His work laid the groundwork for understanding the processes underlying clot formation and the role of various blood components in maintaining health.

In 1871, Stokvis became a professor of physiology at the Athenaeum Illustre of Amsterdam, which later became the University of Amsterdam. Throughout his career, he published numerous influential papers on hematology, contributing significantly to the advancement of medical knowledge in this field.

Stokvis’s legacy extends beyond his research contributions. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Dutch Society of Haematology and served as its president. Additionally, he played a key role in the founding of the Dutch Red Cross and served as its first president.

Berthold Stokvis passed away on April 5, 1902, leaving behind a lasting impact on the fields of hematology and medical science. His dedication to research and his efforts in advancing medical knowledge continue to inspire scientists and physicians today.
