Johannes Heinrich Schultz (1884–1970) was a German psychiatrist and neurologist, best known for developing the concept of autogenic training, a relaxation technique aimed at reducing stress and promoting self-awareness. Born in Gdańsk, Germany (now Poland), Schultz studied medicine in Berlin and later became a professor of neurology and psychiatry at the University of Berlin.

Schultz’s interest in hypnosis and its therapeutic applications led him to develop autogenic training in the 1920s. He believed that by using techniques to induce a state of deep relaxation, individuals could tap into their own self-healing capacities. This method involved a series of simple mental exercises focusing on sensations such as warmth, heaviness, and calmness, which practitioners could use to achieve a state of deep relaxation and mental tranquility.

In 1932, Schultz published his seminal work, “Autogenic Training: A Psychophysiologic Approach in Psychotherapy,” which introduced his method to the wider public. His work laid the foundation for various relaxation and mindfulness techniques used in modern psychotherapy and stress management.

Despite facing opposition during the Nazi regime due to his refusal to conform to Nazi ideology, Schultz continued his research and teaching throughout his life. His legacy lives on through the widespread adoption of autogenic training and its integration into various therapeutic approaches aimed at improving mental well-being.
