Jan-Otto Ottosson (1920–2016), a distinguished Swedish psychiatrist, made significant contributions to the field of psychotherapy and psychiatric research. He earned his medical degree from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and completed his residency in psychiatry there.
Throughout his career, Ottosson played a pivotal role in advancing psychotherapy, particularly in group therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy. He held various academic and clinical positions, including serving as the Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the Karolinska Institute and Director of the Psychiatric Clinic at the Sabbatsberg Hospital in Stockholm. Ottosson actively taught and trained future generations of psychiatrists.
In addition to his clinical work, Ottosson contributed significantly to psychiatric research, particularly in depression and personality disorders. His studies deepened understanding of these conditions and helped develop more effective therapeutic interventions.
Ottosson’s dedication, pioneering work, and advocacy for psychosocial approaches earned him widespread recognition and respect within the field. He was regarded as a compassionate clinician, a visionary leader, and a tireless advocate. Throughout his lifetime, Ottosson received numerous awards and honors for his contributions, including the prestigious Söderberg Prize in Medicine.
