R.D. Laing was a Scottish psychiatrist. He was born on October 7, 1927, in Glasgow. He studied medicine at the University of Glasgow. Laing became famous in the 1960s and 1970s. He challenged conventional psychiatry. He focused on the experiences of individuals with mental illness. His most famous book is “The Divided Self”.

Laing argued that mental illness was a reaction to a sick society. He believed in understanding patients’ personal experiences. He criticized the use of psychiatric drugs and electroconvulsive therapy. Laing founded the Philadelphia Association. This organization created therapeutic communities. These communities provided alternative treatments.

Laing’s work influenced the anti-psychiatry movement. He faced criticism from mainstream psychiatry. Despite this, he remained a prominent figure. Laing continued writing and lecturing until his death. He passed away on August 23, 1989, in Saint-Tropez, France. His ideas still influence mental health discussions today.
