Kenneth Mark Colby (1920–2001) was a pioneer in psychiatry and artificial intelligence (AI). Born in Washington, D.C., he earned his M.D. from Columbia University in 1944. Colby contributed significantly to psychiatry, focusing on understanding and treating mental illness.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Colby explored how computers could enhance psychiatry. He developed “PARRY,” a computer program that simulated paranoid schizophrenia. This work was groundbreaking and showed how AI could model complex psychological conditions.
Colby also wrote “Primer for Psychotherapists” (1951). This book became an essential resource, offering clear, practical guidance on psychotherapy techniques.
Colby’s innovative work in AI and psychiatry has left a lasting impact. His contributions continue to influence these fields today.
